During receiving a visiting Czech Parliament member delegation in the afternoon today (8th), Chairperson Jaushieh Joseph Wu of the Mainland Affairs Council (MAC) urged the international community to prevent China from using force against Taiwan. The peaceful solution of cross-Strait issues and the preservation of peaceful and stable cross-Strait relations are not only consistent with the interests of the Asia-Pacific region, but also conform to the welfare of the entire world.

Chairperson Wu emphasized that the Government expresses serious concerns about the European Union’s possible lifting of the arms sales ban on China. Since China has continued to declare that it will not abandon the use of force against Taiwan, the Government is worried that if the European Union lifts the ban on its arms sales to China, it will give China an erroneous message, thus encouraging it to use force to attack Taiwan. Chairperson Wu believes that the European Union should have been aware of the situation, and would also carefully handle the arms sales ban on China to prevent creating a military imbalance between both sides of the Strait.

Chairperson Wu especially pointed out that China has continued to issue military threats against Taiwan and to oppress Taiwan in the diplomatic arena. It is making every effort to constrict Taiwan’s participation in international activities, both in official international organizations and on non-official occasions, and the situation is becoming more serious. Moreover, Chairperson Wu expressed profound gratitude to the Czech delegation to the 59th General Assembly of the United Nations for speaking boldly to uphold justice on behalf of Taiwan by proposing the principle of universal membership at the United Nations. At the same time, he also urged the Czech Republic to sustain its support for Taiwan’s membership in major international organizations, such as the United Nations and the World Health Organization.

Czech Member of Parliament Ladislav Suster stated that the Czech Republic understands the complicated situation of cross-Strait relations. At the same time, it hopes to maintain balanced and friendly relations with both sides of the Strait. The visiting delegation also warmly praised Taiwan for its economic achievements and affirmed that the economic strength of Taiwan cannot be overlooked. At present, half of the members of the Czech Parliament maintain an amicable stance toward Taiwan. In the future, the Czech Republic and Taiwan will continue to maintain friendly relations.

The visiting delegation of members of the Czech Parliament was headed by Representative Ladislav Suster. The other members of the delegation include Representative Frantisek Strnad and Representative Robert Vokac. They were accompanied by Representative Michael Kral of the Czech Economic and Cultural Office in Taipei. The meeting which lasted approximately 40 minutes was harmonious.
