More than 80% of Taiwanese People Oppose China’s Enactment of “Anti-Separation Law”

The Mainland Affairs Council (MAC) indicated that regardless of any explanation the Chinese authorities used to justify and gloss over their motivation in enacting the “anti-separation law” (so-called anti-secession law), the law will disrupt the cross-strait status quo, restrict democratic development in Taiwan, and jeopardize peace and stability in the region.

With regard to China’s remarks on the “anti-separation law” today, the MAC solemnly indicated that the Chinese authorities were on the one hand reiterating their willingness to handle cross-strait issues through peaceful means, but on the other hand deliberately obstructing and boycotting opportunities for rational negotiations and discussions. Now it is even attempting to use legal procedures to deal with cross-strait issues through non-peaceful means. All these have highlighted China’s refusal to work out a “peaceful solution.” The Chinese authorities have repeatedly distorted Taiwan’s constitutional reform and democratic development, which will certainly intensify the resentment of the Taiwanese people.

The MAC reiterated again that over 80% of the Taiwanese people oppose against China’s enactment of the “anti-separation law,” which shows a strong consensus among the Taiwanese people. The MAC urged the Chinese authorities to respect public opinion and take realistic actions to prevent both sides of the Strait from drifting further apart from each other.
