The Democratic Republic of Sao Tome and Principe has decided on December 21 to terminate diplomatic relations with the Republic of China (Taiwan). The statement of the Office of the President follows:
1. We feel sorry about the decision by Sao Tome and Principe to terminate diplomatic relations with the Republic of China.
2. The Republic of China is fully able to provide assistance to our diplomatic allies in various fronts, and has been far more willing to contribute to its allies' development to the full extent of its abilities. However, it is not our approach to engage in diplomatic games by the means of money.
3. We deeply regret that mainland China took advantage of the financial difficulties faced by Sao Tome and Principe to manipulate the "one China" policy. This kind of approach not only hurts the feelings of the Taiwanese people, but also undermines the stability across the Taiwan Strait. It is by no means helpful to the long-term development of cross-strait ties.
4. We have long been confronted with the same external challenges, no matter which party governs or which policies each administration adopts when it comes to cross-strait relations. This is the reality that our entire nation must face squarely. The cross-strait issue is not about the differences in policies. What matters most is whether or not the people of Taiwan will come together to address this issue effectively.
5. Please rest assured that this government will continue to be cautious in responding to diverse difficulties and challenges, and spare no effort to safeguard our national interests and people's welfare.
