MAC Press Release No. 98

The Hong Kong District Council election was successfully held on November 24 with a record turnout of more than 70%. The people of Hong Kong joined together to hold a peaceful election amidst difficult circumstances following more than five months of intense demonstrations and protests that tore their society apart. The Mainland Affairs Council (MAC) expressed its great respect and admiration for the Hong Kong people who used their precious ballots to demonstrate to the world their firm determination to fight for the core values of freedom, democracy, human rights and the rule of law.

The MAC called on the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) and the Hong Kong government to rightly read the latest public opinion reflected in the outcome of the District Council election and to stop blindly resorting to suppression and coercion. Rational and peaceful communication, democratic dialogue, as well as listening humbly and responding actively and positively to the voice of the people is the only effective way to promptly restore social stability in Hong Kong.
