MAC Press Release No. 59

1. In regard to the more than one million Hongkongers who once again took action to strongly demand that the Hong Kong government withdraw the Fugitive Offenders Ordinance, the Mainland Affairs Council (MAC) today (June 16, 2019) expressed its greatest respect and stated that in the pursuit of democracy and freedom, Taiwan will always walk side-by-side with the people of Hong Kong. The MAC also called on the Hong Kong government to honestly respond to public sentiment and not head further down the wicked road.

2. The amendment to the Fugitive Offenders Ordinance proposed by the Hong Kong government, in the name of handling criminal cases, infringes human rights and the sovereignty of the Republic of China (ROC). It has been collectively rejected by Hong Kong, the international community, and Chinese people both at home and abroad. This fact again highlights the failure of "one country, two systems" in practice and reminds the people of the world the political schemes and wolfish ambitions of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP).

3. The CCP and the Hong Kong government jointly bear the greatest responsibility for causing deep unrest and controversy among Hongkongers today. Taiwan once again urges the Hong Kong government to not repeatedly and arrogantly try to exonerate itself from its own mistakes. It should respond promptly and humbly to public sentiment and immediately withdraw the amendment to the Fugitive Offenders Ordinance.
