MAC Strongly Condemns the CCP for Poaching Taiwan's Diplomatic Ally and Continuing to Undermine the Cross-Strait Status Quo

  • Date:2023-03-26

MAC Press Release No. 013

The Mainland Affairs Council (MAC) issued the following press release today (March 26, 2023) in solemn protest against the announcement of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) to establish diplomatic relations with the Republic of Honduras:

1. The government of the Republic of China strongly protests and condemns the Beijing authorities’ repeated poaching of Taiwan's diplomatic allies, suppression of Taiwan's international participation, and relentless unilateral actions to sabotage the peaceful and stable cross-Strait status quo—all done in an attempt to coerce Taiwan into submission and accepting their political views.

2. The MAC emphasized that the other side across the Taiwan Strait has been intervening and meddling in the political and economic development of other countries through its "dollar/debt diplomacy" and false promises as it seeks to further its agenda of achieving regional strategic expansion. Meanwhile, the CCP has been escalating, in complete disregard of the intense opposition from the Taiwanese people, its diplomatic and military pressure against Taiwan based on its “one China” principle that is both fallacious and incompatible with international norm. Moreover, the CCP has been driving its united front campaign to divide the Taiwan society. These actions reflect the CCP’s misjudgment of the cross-Strait situation and its deliberate sabotage of the development of benign cross-Strait interaction and exchanges. Most importantly, these actions have seriously harmed the dignity, feelings, rights, and interests of the people of Taiwan.

3. The MAC solemnly warned the Beijing authorities that the Republic of China and the People’s Republic of China are not subordinate to each other. No amount of intimidation or pressure can force the people of Taiwan into a compromise or shake their resolve to engage with the world and participate in international affairs. We call on the global community to be vigilant about the CCP’s scheme of expanding its global influence and eventually changing the world order. Our government will continue to strengthen Taiwan's determination and resilience; build unity across party lines and all sectors of the society; firmly defend national sovereignty, democracy, and freedom; and continue to cooperate with diplomatic allies and like-minded countries. We are committed to maintaining regional and cross-Strait peace and striving for Taiwan's due international status and rights.
