MAC Press Release No. 48

In an exclusive interview with People First Party (PFP) Chairman James Soong, Chinese Communist Party (CCP)’s mouthpiece Xinhua News Agency reported that Soong identified with the Mainland's "one country, two systems model for Taiwan" and said it could be further discussed. The Mainland Affairs Council (MAC) today (April 30, 2019) solemnly stated that the objective of "Xi's five points" is to eliminate the Republic of China (ROC) with the "one country, two systems" and the "1992 consensus" set forth by Beijing. This can never be accepted by the Taiwanese people.

The government's cross-Strait policy has always been clear and consistent in rejecting the political claims forced upon by the CCP. There is a cross-party consensus that Taiwan's 23 million people have the right to decide the future development of cross-Strait relations, and we will not discuss the elimination of our country with the saber-rattling side.

The MAC stressed that "sovereignty is not a bargaining chip and democracy cannot be traded." The people of Taiwan should clearly recognize that the CCP is intensifying its united front work to divide, intimidate, and oppress Taiwan. All politicians visiting the Mainland should uphold positions which safeguard the well-being and interests of the 23 million people of Taiwan and truly reflect the public opinion.

Chairman Soong has repeatedly stated in the past that the ROC is a sovereign state and will never accept "one country, two systems" nor position Taiwan as a local government of mainland China. We fully understand and sternly condemn the Chinese state-controlled media for its persistent efforts to substitute one thing for another, distort facts, and spread disinformation. We thus recommend that the PFP further clarify the situation in order to restore all the facts.
