MAC Holds the International Conference on Chinese Path to Modernization under One-Party Rule

  The Mainland Affairs Council (MAC) stated today (November 28, 2023) that the International Conference on Chinese Path to Modernization will be held on November 30 at the Shangri-La's Far Eastern Plaza Hotel in Taipei. The MAC commissioned the Institute of International Relations at National Chengchi University to organize the conference, which will delve into the internal politics, economy, social governance, and foreign policy of mainland China and discuss the development of situation in the Taiwan Strait and this region.

  Minister Chiu Tai-san will present a speech at the opening ceremony on recent developments across the Taiwan Strait and the government's policy position. A number of overseas scholars in relevant fields have been invited to the conference, including keynote speaker Professor David Shambaugh, a distinguished expert on mainland China studies from the Elliott School of International Affairs at George Washington University in the United States (US); Professor Timothy Cheek from the Institute of Asian Research (IAR) at the University of British Columbia in Canada; IAR Director Yves Tiberghien; Professor Yasuhiro Matsuda from the Institute of Advanced Studies on Asia at the University of Tokyo; Professor Madoka Fukada from the Department of Global Politics, Faculty of Law at Hosei University in Japan; Assistant Professor of International Studies Kim Dong-Chan at Yonsei University in South Korea; and Chu Ming-chin, lecturer in Chinese Politics at the University of Southampton in the United Kingdom. The conference will also be joined via video by Kristin Shi-Kupfer, Director of the Research Area on Public Policy and Society at the Mercator Institute for China Studies (MERICS) in Berlin, Germany; and Professor Scott L. Kastner from the Department of Government and Politics at the University of Maryland in the US. Several prominent experts and scholars from Taiwan will also join the discussions.

  The MAC stated that the world is closely following the impact of the development path of "Chinese-style modernization" proposed by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), namely the risks and challenges the path poses for mainland China's economy and society and its implications on regional circumstances and global issues. The observations and analyses by scholars and experts at this international conference will further participants’ understanding of both the specific components and outlook of this path.
