Taiwan's Position on the temporary suspension of operations of the Hong Kong Economic, Trade and Cultural Office

  • Date:2021-05-18

MAC Press Release No. 004

1. Taiwan respects the decision made by the Hong Kong government today to temporarily suspend operations of the Hong Kong Economic, Trade and Cultural Office (HKETCO) based in Taiwan, regardless of the reason behind the closure. However, we do express our deep regret at the unilateral decision as the HKETCO was established in accordance with the consensus reached in 2011, which led to the setting up of respective representative offices in Hong Kong and Taiwan, and has been in operations for many years.

2. Considering the welfare of people in Taiwan and Hong Kong, and to safeguard the rights of our citizens in Hong Kong, staff members at the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office (TECO) in Hong Kong will hold fast to their position and maintain the operations of the office. Related services will continue to be available to people in Taiwan and Hong Kong.
