Mac News Release No. 002

Taiwan Solidarity Union (TSU) Chairman Huang Kun-huei convened a press conference today (January 8, 2014), during which he made the untrue and malicious allegations that "Wang Yu-chi made three major pledges in exchange for 'Ma-Xi Meeting' and the seven-in-one election support from the Mainland" and also "sold Taiwan for glory." The Mainland Affairs Council (MAC) sternly objects to these allegations, which are emphatically untrue and distort the facts.

MAC Minister Wang Yu-chi stated that arrangements for the visit to the Mainland have not yet been finalized. Moreover, the MAC has never mentioned anything related to the alleged three major pledges or election support while communicating with the Mainland side. These baseless, fabricated and malicious allegations by Chairman Huang only serve to misguide the people, undermine bipartisan trust and further polarize our society. The position of the executive branch in the course of cross-strait interactions is to safeguard Taiwan's dignity and fight for the best interests of Taiwan; arrangements related to Minister Wang's visit to the Mainland are conducted in adherence to this principle without any compromise or change.

Minister Wang emphasized that, in a democracy, oversight of the government is the due right and responsibility of opposition parties. However, fabrication of facts and criticism by using "unfair labels" cannot be accepted by the people and is of no help to benign competition between party politics. Minister Wang stated that the words and deeds of politicians are influential, and that Chairman Huang's future criticisms should be established on the basis of facts, while at the same time, the MAC is also willing to subject its policies to inspection by the opposition parties.
