MAC Press Release No. 010

Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Macao have different laws and regulations regarding items that can be carried across their borders. The Mainland Affairs Council (MAC) reminded people not to bring items prohibited by the laws of Hong Kong and Macao, including gas sprays, stun guns, extendable batons, brass knuckles, switchblades, comb knives, and tobacco products to avoid breaking the law and causing travel delays. Moreover, in view of the changing situation in Hong Kong and Macao and in response to local regulations and enforcement trends, the MAC advised people to register with the "Online Registration System for Taiwanese Citizens Visiting Hong Kong and Macao" (URL: https://www.mac.gov.tw/cp.aspx?n=DB5CA7E8ABA7E5DC) on the MAC website before traveling to Hong Kong and Macao to help the government provide necessary assistance when needed.

To further protect the safety of the people of Taiwan, the MAC website provides not only the "Online Registration System for Taiwanese Citizens Visiting Hong Kong and Macao" but also a section on " Mainland China, Hong Kong, and Macao Emergency Service Information" to provide "precautions for people traveling to or transiting through Hong Kong and Macao" and other relevant information. The MAC also reminds the public to be aware of the possible risks posed by local regulations to their personal safety and rights and to carefully assess plans to travel to or transit through Hong Kong and Macao. Individuals encountering emergencies in Hong Kong and Macao should contact the MAC's Hong Kong Office (local name: Taipei Economic and Cultural Office; 24-Hour Emergency Hotline: 852-6143-9012) or its Macao office (local name: Taipei Economic and Cultural Office; 24-Hour Emergency Hotline: 853-6687-2557) for assistance.

Moreover, recently some Taiwanese citizens returning to Taiwan from overseas trips have been fined for bringing in pork products in violation of regulations for animal and plant quarantine inspection. The MAC especially reminds the public to be particularly careful not to carry meat products when returning to Taiwan, and to avoid bringing in animal and plant products prohibited by law to ensure that Taiwan remains free of contagious viral diseases.
