MAC Press Release No. 26

The Mainland Affairs Council (MAC) expressed serious concern over the arrests of several Hong Kong media figures and pan-democrats by the Hong Kong police today (October 28, 2020). The MAC urged the Hong Kong government to protect its people's freedom of assembly and demonstration in accordance with the Hong Kong Basic Law.

The Hong Kong society continues to see clashes and protests till recently.  The Hong Kong people have not relinquished their pursuit of democracy despite the pandemic, nor has the international community downgraded its support for freedom and human rights in Hong Kong. We believe that, the more intensified the pandemic develops, the more important for the ruling government to unite all sectors of society to battle the disease. Settling scores is unhelpful for stabilizing the situation, nor will it earn people's approval for the government.

In view of the current situation, the MAC hopes that the Hong Kong government will exercise restraint, and stop exacerbating unrest. The government should contemplate on and sincerely respond to people's demands. This is the key solution to the crux of the problem.
