MAC News Reference Material: Response to the Taiwan Affairs Office's Deliberate Misinterpretation of Remarks by the ROC Government

  • Date:2018-04-11

April 11, 2018

The Mainland Affairs Council (MAC) stated in regard to the negative misinterpretation and irrational criticism by mainland China's Taiwan Affairs Office today (April 11, 2018) of Taiwan's policy positions and views of democratic pluralism that benign cross-Strait interaction is not Taiwan's responsibility alone. Taiwan has always maintained an attitude of goodwill reconciliation and promotion of dialogue to create opportunities. However, the Mainland needs to speak and act with prudence and must by no means maliciously lead cross-Strait relations in a negative direction. It must also clearly recognize that the current cross-Strait stalemate hinges solely on its unwillingness to face the reality of separate governance across the Strait and the existence of the Republic of China. Stubbornly resorting to empty criticism and reckless judgments does not help to advance harmonious cross-Strait exchanges.

The MAC indicated that President Tsai Ing-wen has repeatedly stressed that the government has been consistent in its position on cross-Strait relations and has always insisted on maintaining the status quo of peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait. Facing the complex and changing external situation, Taiwan has the determination and will to defend its sovereignty, dignity, and democracy. It will also continue to strengthen contact and interaction with all parties in the region to jointly safeguard security and prosperity in the Asia Pacific region. The government calls on the Mainland, as an increasingly powerful player on the international political and economic stage, to take responsibility and respect the democratic system and people's rights in Taiwan. Aggressive coercion and provocative words are not acts appropriate to an accountable party. Resolving differences through communication is the only approach beneficial to advancing cross-Strait relations together.
