Taiwan Will Never Bow to Hegemony or Coercion: MAC Condemns CCP for Poaching Taiwan's Diplomatic Ally and Seriously Undermining the Foundation for the Development of Cross-Strait Relations

  • Date:2021-12-10

MAC Press Release No. 019

The Mainland Affairs Council (MAC) issued a solemn statement today (December 10, 2021) to the announcement made by the Beijing authorities regarding establishing diplomatic relations with Nicaragua. The MAC strongly condemned the authorities of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) for their vicious poaching of Taiwan’s diplomatic ally with financial interests, brutal suppression of Taiwan’s engagement with and survival space in the global community, and severe disruption of the foundation of peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait. Facing persistent and malicious provocations by the other side across the Taiwan Strait, our government will firmly defend national sovereignty, dignity, democracy, and freedom; meanwhile, Taiwan will never succumb or compromise.

The MAC stressed that the CCP authorities are the root cause of the current downturn and tension of cross-Strait relations. The nature of the CCP regime is authoritarian, hypocritical, and two-faced; it is also exhibiting ambitions to expand, as is evidenced by its aggressive incursions into Taiwan’s airspace and encroachment on the sovereignty and security of foreign nations. These characteristics and acts have not only posed severe threat to regional peace and the international order but jeopardized the value system based on freedom and democracy. Mainland China is definitely not a responsible country in maintaining the global order; this is an internationally recognized fact. The Beijing authorities have weaponized the fallacy of the "one China” principle and intensified its diplomatic suppression, military intimidation, and economic coercion targeting Taiwan in a bid to force the latter to bow to its unjustified political mandate. This is a policy miscalculation reflecting that China is mired in governance failures both at home and abroad, and has to resort to this unscrupulous act to shift focus and bully the democratic society of Taiwan. This will only backfire and result in devastating consequences.

The MAC stated that the Beijing authorities are the saboteur for destabilizing cross-Strait relations and regional security; they must stop their provocations and ill-advised actions immediately. The Republic of China (ROC) is a sovereign state, and Taiwan has never been part of the People's Republic of China. The people of Taiwan will only unite more strongly without ever accepting any of Beijing's ill-intended political frameworks. We also call on the international community to take seriously the CCP's ongoing strategic expansion and exploitative practices. Our government will continue to build self-defense capabilities and maintain peace across the Taiwan Strait. It will also adhere to the bottom line of the "four commitments" proposed by President Tsai Ing-wen, deepen cooperation with the global community, and make appropriate and prudent response to the current situation.
