The Mainland Affairs Council (MAC) today (October 26, 2022) stated that the International Conference on PRC’s Power Shift and Governance will be held on October 28 at Shangri-La Far Eastern Plaza Hotel in Taipei. The MAC commissioned the Chinese Council of Advanced Policy Studies to hold this conference for the purpose of enhancing the overall understanding of mainland China’s domestic environment in areas of its politics, economy, social governance, foreign policy, the latest leadership reshuffle of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), and the developments of regional dynamics and cross-Strait relations.
The MAC stated that Minister Chiu Tai-san will present a speech at the opening ceremony to explain recent developments of the cross-Strait situation and our government's policy position. This conference will see many international scholars in related fields participate in person, including keynote speaker (via video) Richard N. Haass, President of the US-based think tank Council on Foreign Relations (CFR); Dr. Lowell Dittmer and Dr. Thomas Gold, Professors of the University of California Berkeley (UC Berkeley), United States; Dr. Mathieu Duchâtel, Director of the Asia Program at the France-based think tank Institut Montaigne; Dr. Tomoo Marukawa, Professor of the University of Tokyo, Japan; Dr. Harry Harding, Professor of the University of Virginia, United States; Dr. Yoichi Kato, Research Fellow at Waseda University, Japan; and Dr. Stephen J. Hartnett, Professor of the University of Colorado Denver (CU Denver), United States. In addition, several other renowned scholars will join the conference via videoconferencing, including Ryan Hass, Senior Fellow at the US-based think tank Brookings Institution and Drew Thompson, Former Director for China, Taiwan and Mongolia in the Office of the Secretary of Defense & Visiting Senior Research Fellow at the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy at the National University of Singapore. Many influential scholars in Taiwan will also attend the conference.
The MAC indicated that the recently concluded the 20th CCP National Congress has profound implications on the future of mainland China both at home and abroad as it not only unveiled the new lineup of the CCP leadership but formulated mainland China’s development objectives for the next five years or longer. We expect that, through the scholars and experts’ exchange of observations and analyses at this international conference, we will gain a comprehensive understanding of the CCP’s power structure, decision-making, and their potential influences on both the region and cross-Strait relations.
