MAC Press Release No. 60

Taiwan is a democratic and free society under the rule of law. The government allows Mainland students to study in Taiwan to increase campus diversity and promote awareness and understanding between young people on both sides of the Taiwan Strait. Mainland students in Taiwan also enjoy freedom and human rights protections. The Mainland Affairs Council demands that the Mainland stop politically manipulating Mainland students in Taiwan and framing Taiwan personnel for espionage and interfering in the functioning of Taiwan's democratic, free, and rule-of-law society.

Mainland China has made reckless allegations against Taiwan through media propaganda without the due process of democracy and rule of law. This will only increase doubts about mainland China and raise questions about Beijing's motives and aims. Taiwan calls on the Mainland to stop maliciously framing Taiwan with its persistent authoritarian and totalitarian tactics of incrimination and preventing Mainland students from studying in Taiwan through political manipulations. The Mainland will only increase suspicion and misunderstanding between the two sides and harm the development of cross-Strait relations by insisting on engaging in such manipulations.

The related ministries and departments this evening refuted these allegations as baseless.
