MAC Press Release No. 007

The Mainland Affairs Council (MAC) issued the following press release today (February 14, 2023) to announce the resumption of entry applications to Taiwan by Hong Kong and Macao residents, effective from 9:00 a.m. on February 20, 2023, in consideration of the gradual easing of Taiwan’s COVID-19 situation and policy objective of promoting healthy and orderly exchanges in the post-pandemic era. The measure is in line with the Central Epidemic Command Center’s plans to further relax COVID-19 restrictions beginning from the same day (February 20) and a comprehensive assessment. The details are explained below:

1. Online applications for temporary entry permits (eVisas) by Hong Kong and Macao residents will resume.

2. To visit Taiwan, eligible persons can apply for an eVisa or an entry/exit permit via the "Alien Online Application System” (the “Online System”) of the National Immigration Agency (NIA) under the Ministry of the Interior. Please visit the NIA’s website for information on the required application documents and procedures.

3. All entry restrictions previously imposed for COVID-19 prevention and control on Hong Kong and Macao residents will be lifted. Since Hong Kong and Macao residents will soon be able to visit Taiwan with an eVisa or an entry/exit permit (applied via the Online System), the special program implemented on November 7 last year granting entry permits only to tourists visiting as part of a tour group will be discontinued as entry applications return to normal.
