MAC Press Release No. 030

The Mainland Affairs Council (MAC) added new information on "Precautions for Traveling to or Transiting through Hong Kong and Macao" under the "Emergency Service Information and Travel Advisories for Mainland China, Hong Kong, and Macao" section of its official website. Released in time for the peak summer travel season, the notification was made in consideration of the changing situation in Hong Kong and Macao, regulatory developments, and law enforcement trends there. The MAC reminded Taiwanese people not to carry items prohibited under the laws of Hong Kong and Macao, such as gas sprays, stun batons, extendable batons, brass knuckles, switchblades, comb knives, and tobacco products. Travelers should also be aware of the potential risks posed to their personal safety and rights under local regulations, particularly the Hong Kong National Security Law and Anti-mask Law.

To enhance personal safety of Taiwanese people, the MAC launched the Online Registration System for Taiwanese Citizens Visiting Hong Kong and Macao in October 2019 (link: https://www.mac.gov.tw/cp.aspx?n=DB5CA7E8ABA7E5DC). It urges Taiwanese people to register their personal information and contact details through the website before traveling to Hong Kong and Macao to facilitate timely assistance in case of need. Individuals facing emergencies during their stay in Hong Kong and Macao can contact the MAC's representative office in Hong Kong (known locally as the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office; 24-hour emergency hotline: +852-6143-9012) or the MAC's representative office in Macao (known locally as the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office; 24-hour emergency hotline: +853-6687-2557) for assistance.
