Taiwan is determined to participate in the international community and is not afraid of China’s military suppression

The Mainland Affairs Council (MAC) emphasized today (August 1, 2007) that Taiwan is an independent sovereign country. Applying to join the United Nations (UN) has been an unanimous consensus and hope of all of the people of Taiwan and of both the ruling and opposition political parties. The collective rights of the 23 million Taiwanese people should be protected under the UN Charter. However, the Beijing authorities lack understanding of Taiwan’s mainstream opinions and have disregarded the fact that Taiwan and China have no jurisdiction over each other. In addition to its deceitful maneuvers to manipulate the international community into treating Taiwan as a part of China, Beijing, with the intention of annexing Taiwan, has tried to use military means to force Taiwan to accept its "one China" framework. The MAC solemnly pinpoints China as the creator of tensions in cross-strait relations and destroyer of the status quo in the Taiwan Strait. Any hegemonic actions aimed at undermining or interfering with Taiwan's pursuit of democracy, quest for survival or demand for peace are ultimately bound to backfire.

The MAC indicates that Taiwan's peaceful appeal to participate in the international community and to seek the protection of collective international security transcends unification-versus-independence ideology as well as narrow political frameworks. The government of Taiwan will never waver in its determination to actively seek participation in the UN and pursue a policy orientation that respects the will of its people. The MAC indicates that the Chinese government has long treated Taiwan with a confrontational mindset and attempted to change the status quo in the Taiwan Strait with de jure unification and unification by military force while denying Taiwan's national sovereignty. Moreover, the Chinese leaders and military have repeatedly and peremptorily stressed that they do not exclude the possibility of using military force against Taiwan. This is the real root of the increasing deterioration of cross-strait relations. The MAC calls on the Chinese authorities to promptly abandon their faulty and ossified political mindset, to discard the use of violent non-peaceful means, and to identify with basic democratic values—that is, to step onto the right path.
