The Mainland Affairs Council (MAC) issued the following statement today (March 19, 2022) on the Taiwan Strait-related comments made by the leaders of the United States and China on a video call:
1. Security in the Taiwan Strait is inextricably linked with peace in the Indo-Pacific region. The Republic of China (ROC) is a sovereign state and a critical stakeholder for the region in defending democratic values and security interests. The ROC has the right to interact with the international community. We oppose the coercion and pressure from the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) and vow to safeguard our national sovereignty, democracy, and freedom. We thank the US and other parties for attaching great importance to the security issue in the Taiwan Strait and for reaffirming their staunch support for Taiwan.
2. The current international circumstances are complex and sensitive. The CCP authorities should shoulder their responsibility for global affairs by taking concrete actions to voice condemnation and curb military aggression, which are the efforts that should be made to help achieve a peaceful resolution of disputes. Meanwhile, the CCP authorities should face the cross-Strait reality with a more rational attitude, respect the public opinion in Taiwan, address international concerns, promptly abandon the mentality and approach of attempting to resolve differences by force, and seek to enhance cross-Strait relations in a pragmatic manner. Only these actions will help them avoid repeated miscalculation that might lead to devastating and severe consequences.
