The Republic of China is a Sovereign State: Taiwan has Never been Part of the People's Republic of China

  • Date:2021-03-21

MAC Press Release No. 001

The Mainland Affairs Council (MAC) today (March 21, 2021) solemnly refuted the fact-distorting statement on Taiwan’s sovereignty made by Director of the Foreign Affairs Commission of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) Central Committee Yang Jiechi and others during a high-level meeting between US and Chinese officials, which claimed that "Taiwan is an inalienable part of China's territory.” The Republic of China is a sovereign state. Taiwan has never been, and will never be, part of the People's Republic of China. Only the 23 million people of Taiwan have the right to speak and decide for Taiwan’s future and development.

The MAC emphasized that the government is committed to maintaining peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait, and is staunchly defending national sovereignty and Taiwan's democracy. This position has been firm and consistent, and has garnered affirmation and support from the international community and the people of Taiwan. We call on the CCP authorities, once again, to face up to the cross-Strait reality and the fact that the people of Taiwan do not accept their political framework; to stop employing military intimidation and diplomatic suppression to oppress Taiwan; and to pragmatically resort to communication and dialogue without preconditions to resolve political differences.
