(1) Direct cross-strait sea and air transport has saved time and cost and improved transportation efficiency between the two sides. The normalization of regular cross-strait flights has enabled various air transport services to be managed in accordance with international flight guidelines. Travel agencies may now include Mainland destinations in Taiwan's global aviation network and connect it with prime international destinations to enhance Taiwan's aviation industry competitiveness and bring added value to Taiwan’s economic development. Furthermore, direct cross-strait shipping has significantly reduced delivery time and costs, prompting enterprises to develop their logistics industry as well as airport connections in ports and surrounding areas. These developments may now be linked airports and create sea-air multimodal distribution and other high value-added activities, which in turn may develop into an international logistics hub in order to strengthen Taiwan's qualifications for becoming the primary operations center in the Asia-Pacific region.
(2) The realization of direct cross-strait sea and air transport has facilitated the flow of passengers between the two sides to promote bilateral economic and trade exchanges and is a key step to the normalization of cross-strait relations. It also re-established Taiwan's strategic economic position in Asia, even in the Asia Pacific region, as well as enhanced Taiwan's overall competitiveness and consolidated the links between Taiwan and the international market. We are convinced that direct sea and air transportation will attract more multinational corporations to invest in Taiwan and that many will choose Taiwan as their base of operations for mainland Chinese and Southeast Asian markets. The effectiveness of cross-strait direct flights will be gradually brought into play and realized.
