MAC Press Release No. 003

The Mainland Affairs Council (MAC) issued the following press release to mark the launch of the “Online Registration System for Taiwanese Citizens Visiting Mainland China” (https://www.mac.gov.tw) (hereinafter the “Registration System for mainland China”) on the MAC’s official website, a system aimed at strengthening emergency services for Taiwanese citizens visiting mainland China. Travelers visiting mainland China for all reasons can register their personal and contact information in the system, with which the government can get in immediate contact with them and provide necessary assistance and services.

The MAC stated that it has provided several services to enhance the safety of Taiwanese citizens visiting mainland China, such as commissioning the Straits Exchange Foundation (SEF) to establish a 24-hour emergency service hotline. The more recent measures are as follows. First, since December, 2014, the MAC has been operating a text service where Taiwanese citizens would receive notifications for sources of potential emergency and care services upon their arrival. Second, from October 1, 2019, the MAC has been running the “Online Registration System for Taiwanese Citizens Visiting Hong Kong and Macao” (hereinafter the “Registration System for Hong Kong and Macao,”) a system in which Taiwanese travelers are encouraged to register relevant information before traveling to enable the timely contact and assistance from the MAC’s representative offices in Hong Kong and Macao. The latest launch of the “Registration System for mainland China” constitutes the third measure adopted by the MAC to enhance protection for Taiwanese citizens visiting mainland China.

The MAC stated that the government has always placed great importance on the personal safety of Taiwanese citizens away from home. The MAC called on the public to make good use of the “Registration System for mainland China” and “Registration System for Hong Kong and Macao” to facilitate the timely contact and assistance from the government. In addition, in case of emergency in mainland China, Taiwanese citizens can also reach the SEF directly at its emergency service hotline (02-25339995). For emergencies in Hong Kong and Macao, citizens can call the 24-hour emergency hotlines of the MAC’s Representative Offices in Hong Kong (852-6143-9012) and Macao (853-6687-2557) for relevant information and services.
