  • Date:2021-10-27

MAC Press Release No. 014

The Mainland Affairs Council (MAC) stated today (October 27, 2021) that in order to understand the changes and trends in mainland China, to have a picture of mainland Chinese politics, economy, society and other fields, and to grasp the impact mainland China has on the Taiwan Strait and the regional circumstances, the MAC commissioned the Chinese Council of Advanced Policy Studies to hold an international conference on “Chinese Political, Economic and Social Dynamics under CCP” at Shangri-La's Far Eastern Plaza Hotel in Taipei on October 29.

The MAC expressed that Minister Chiu Tai-san will give an opening speech to explicate the recent cross-Strait trends and development and the policy position of the government. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the foreign scholars invited will participate through videoconferencing. Former United States Deputy Secretary of State and University Professor at Syracuse University James Steinberg, and former Senior Director for Asian Affairs at the White House’s National Security Council (NSC) and Georgetown University Professor Evan Medeiros will deliver keynote speeches. Other prominent scholars participating include Boston University Professor Joseph Fewsmith, Director of the Asia Program at Institut Montaigne Mathieu Duchâtel, University of California, Berkeley Professor Thomas Gold, Johns Hopkins University Professor Ho-Fung Hung, University of Tokyo Professor Tomoo Marukawa, and National University of Singapore Professor Sarah Y. Tong. Many important scholars and experts from Taiwan will also participate in-person in the conference discussions.

The MAC indicated that in recent years, the CCP has been touting its achievements in ruling and governance, and called on its people to unite under the party banner in order to achieve the goal of building a modern superpower. The observation and analysis made by the scholars and experts at this international conference will more comprehensively deepen our understanding of mainland China’s actual situation and the challenges the country faces in various fields under the CCP rule. The observation and analysis will also help us accurately assess and weigh the Beijing authorities’ response to mainland China’s domestic conflicts and the possible impacts of the response on US-China and cross-Strait relations.
