MAC Press Release No. 38

The Mainland Affairs Council (MAC) today (July 1, 2020) stated that MAC Minister Chen Ming-tong and Taiwan-Hong Kong Economic and Cultural Co-operation Council (THEC) Chairperson Chang Hsiao-yueh jointly inaugurated and announced the opening of the Taiwan-Hong Kong Office for Exchanges and Services (hereinafter as “the Office”) this morning. They expressed hope that the Office would highlight Taiwan's determination and goodwill to care for the people of Hong Kong and promote positive exchange and interaction between Taiwan and Hong Kong.

The MAC reiterated that the Taiwan-Hong Kong Office for Exchanges and Services aims to provide friendly and convenient consulting and assistance services for Hong Kong citizens coming to Taiwan for education, employment, investment, entrepreneurship, immigration, and settlement, as well as for Hong Kong-based multinational and international corporations seeking to develop in Taiwan. The Office will also pragmatically handle affairs related to humanitarian assistance and care for Hong Kong people through public-private partnerships, subject to national security considerations and existing regulations. Through the Office’s establishment, Taiwan demonstrates our support for democracy and freedom in Hong Kong, while at the same time we also hope to attract Hong Kong capital and talent to Taiwan to create new opportunities for Taiwan's economic development.

The MAC stressed that the government will continue to fully support the Taiwan-Hong Kong Office for Exchanges and Service so it may further improve related consultation services. The MAC expressed appreciations to all sides for their invaluable input at each stage and hoped for their continued guidance on ongoing improvements after the Office begins official operations.
