The Mainland Affairs Council (MAC) issued a statement today (May 28, 2020) in response to the CCP National People’s Congress’s passage of the Decision on Establishing and Improving the Legal System and Enforcement Mechanisms for the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) to Safeguard National Security. It stated that this peremptory passage of the law rammed through by the CCP in disregard of public opinion seriously undermines Hong Kong’s democracy, freedom, and rule of law. The ROC government strongly condemns such actions.
The MAC stressed that the CCP's handling of Hong Kong affairs not only concerns the well-being of the Hong Kong people, but also pertains to the psychological gap between the two sides of the Taiwan Strait, and is also relevant to the prosperity and stability of the Asia-Pacific region. By forcing through the National Security Law and establishing a national security agency, the CCP abandons its pledge of maintaining a "high degree of autonomy" for "50 years without change" in Hong Kong, and further confirms the hypocrisy in its "one country, two systems" model. China’s actions in no way benefit cross-Strait relations, and will also shake the international community’s confidence.
The MAC stated that staying silent would come at the price of condoning the centralized authoritarian Mainland regime to erode our hard-won democracy and human rights. Taiwan cannot turn a deaf ear to Hong Kong’s evolving circumstances. By instruction of the President, the MAC will map out a humanitarian assistance action plan for Hong Kong citizens in Taiwan, in which policy objectives for their residence, placement, employment and life will be made more comprehensive. We stand together with other democracies of the world in defending universal values and speaking out for Hong Kong’s freedom.
