MAC Press Release No. 22

In view of the ongoing 2019-nCoV spread in mainland China, the increasingly severe situation of the epidemic outbreak in Guangdong cities bordering Hong Kong and Macao, the potential risk of community transmission in Hong Kong and Macao, and constant doubts from the public over the sufficiency of medical capacity to respond, entry of Hong Kong and Macao residents into Taiwan will be suspended from midnight on February 11, 2020 as disease control takes priority. The travel ban will exclude persons travelling for performance of contractual obligations in business, personnel transfers of multinational companies (including accompanying personnel), and spouses and children under the age of 20 of Taiwanese who have already obtained Taiwan Residence Certificate. Hong Kongers and Macanese who hold valid entry and exit permits will need to postpone their trips to Taiwan. In addition, students from Hong Kong and Macao are also suspended from entering Taiwan. All persons approved of entry will be put under 14-day home quarantine upon arrival.

The Mainland Affairs Council (MAC) stressed that the 14-day home quarantine requirement for all Hong Kong and Macao residents visiting Taiwan, effective from February 7, has been properly implemented on the part of Hong Kong and Macao students studying in Taiwan through coordination by the Ministry of Education and the efforts and cooperation of local universities. However, after full consideration of recent development of the epidemic outbreak and Taiwan’s medical resources and capacity, the government decided to suspend Hong Kong and Macao students from entry into Taiwan to ensure the health of Taiwanese people and students from Hong Kong and Macao.

The above-mentioned measures will be adjusted and updated according to the epidemic situation.
