The Mainland Affairs Council (MAC) strongly lodged a protest and expressed regret over China’s repeated arbitrary obstruction of Taiwan’s participation in the World Health Assembly (WHA). The MAC indicated that China has been forcibly suppressing Taiwan in the international arena and completely ignored the 23 million Taiwanese people’s petition for health and human rights protection. China has rigidly adhered to its so-called “one China” principle, and brazenly obstructed Taiwan’s participation in the international health organizations for seeking disease prevention. China’s obstruction has placed the Taiwanese people’s health and general welfare in jeopardy and under constant threat. These hostile actions against the Taiwanese people will seriously undermine cross-strait relations.

The MAC indicated that China has recently taken the initiative to invite Taiwan’s opposition party leaders to visit China. It has dominated these meetings by deliberately delivering messages that hint at possibly providing assistance to Taiwan in its participation in international organizations and other activities. However, China has conducted irrational comprehensive suppression of Taiwan through diplomatic channels at the same time. For example, a few days ago, China claimed that it already exchanged views and signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the WHO Secretariat which will require Taiwan’s delegation to be addressed as “Taiwan, China.” At the same time, China’s diplomatic agencies also wrote formal letters to the delegations of Taiwan’s allies, warning them that “Taiwan is a part of China and it is not qualified to join the WHO.” China’s actions have completely proved that it is taking advantage of the visits to China by Taiwan’s opposition party leaders to create a disguise in an attempt to ease and diminish the Taiwanese people’s deep desire to gain access to the international community and deceitfully block Taiwan’s participation in international organizations. The MAC indicated that this is a typical example of China’s inconsistency in their words and actions.
