  • Date:2005-03-21

The Mainland Affairs Council (MAC) indicated today (March 21, 2005) that China has ignored opposition from Taiwan and the international community and stubbornly passed the “anti-separation law”(so-called anti-secession law). In response to this development, the U.S. government and Congress have openly expressed serious concern and opposition to the law. The MAC is grateful for this gesture from the U.S.

During this period, the U.S. government has stated that the passage of the “anti-separation law” was unfortunate and did not “serve the purpose of peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait.” The U.S. opposes using non-peaceful means to decide Taiwan’s future. Meanwhile, the U.S. reiterated that the cross-strait issue should be resolved peacefully. Furthermore, the U.S. Congress passed a resolution giving its support to Taiwan. The MAC stated that the U.S. government and Congress share the same position as Taiwan in opposing the passage of the “anti-separation law.”

The MAC also indicated that the scope of application and articles in the “anti-separation law” are expressed in the most abstract and vague of terms. The law emphasized that China will use non-peaceful means to resolve the cross-strait dispute. The law serves as a blank check for authorization of war and has seriously sabotaged peace and stability in the East Asian region. For this reason, the law has raised serious concerns and met opposition among various countries.

In addition to the U.S., the European Union, Japan, Canada, and Australia have expressed their strong opposition to China’s unilateral passage of the “anti-separation law” and its intention to use non-peaceful means to resolve the Taiwan issue. Taiwan expresses its gratitude to these countries.
