Jaushieh Joseph Wu: Pursuit of Peaceful and Stable Cross-Strait Development Is Taiwan’s Goal

Upon the invitation of the General Chamber of Commerce of the Republic of China, Mainland Affairs Council (MAC) Chairman Jaushieh Joseph Wu gave a special lecture today (3rd) on “Peace and Development: Creating a New Cross-Strait Win-Win Situation,” and exchanged views with representatives of the industrial and commercial sectors attending the lecture.

With regard to Chairman Gary Wang’s appeal that both sides of the Strait should avoid making statements on de-Sinicization and de-Taiwanization, Chairman Wu emphasized that it is undeniable that we possess cultural and blood ties. However, politically, Taiwan has transformed into a domain of common identity. This very domain is the place that we must jointly defend, and the place where we make a livelihood, gather our common expectations, and ponder on our integrated thoughts together as a nation. What we should seriously reflect on is how we can make it a better place to live in.

Chairman Wu pointed out that we do not intend to antagonize China. What we should think about is how we can live in peace with China. We believe that should China ponder over the same thing vice versa, both sides would certainly come to have a common ground.

Chairman Wu said that an atmosphere of goodwill and reconciliation has always been prepared in Taiwan for the pursuit of peaceful and stable cross-Strait development. Taiwan’s cross-Strait policy after May 20 this year has been goodwill, active cooperation, and permanent peace.
