The Chairman of the Mainland Affairs Council (MAC), Jaushieh Joseph Wu’s article entitled “Answering Beijing’s War Law,” was published in the Asian Wall Street Journal, the Wall Street Journal, and the Wall Street Journal Europe on March 24, 2005. In the article, Chairman Wu explicitly announced to the international community that Taiwan is resorting to “democracy and peace” to answer China’s threat of force.

In the article, Chairman Wu indicated that, despite China’s passage of the “anti-separation law,” Taiwan has continued to promote channels of peaceful dialogue. However, as long as Beijing maintains its aggressive stance, Europe should keep its arms embargo in place. Chairman Wu also urged the international community to “tell Beijing in no uncertain terms that there is never any justification for resorting to ‘non-peaceful means’ against Taiwan.”

Founded in 1889, the Wall Street Journal is highly respected by political, economic, and social policy-makers as well as opinion leaders worldwide. With a circulation of approximately two million copies in the U.S., the Wall Street Journal has developed into a very influential newspaper and is currently the second largest publication in the U.S.

Chairman Wu will meet with members of the international media this afternoon (March 25, 2005) to state Taiwan’s solemn position. The international media is in Taiwan to report on the rally for "Democracy and Peace to Protect Taiwan" to be held on March 26.
