The Mainland Affairs Council (MAC) stated today (February 5, 2016) that MAC Minister Hsia and Mainland’s TAO Director Zhang Zhijun exchanged views on recent cross-strait developments through the established hotline.

The MAC pointed out that during the conversation, Minister Hsia highlighted the peaceful and stable development of cross-strait relations as the greatest common factor in Taiwan across party lines and areas, and that it is also the mainstream opinion basis setting major policy directions; both sides of the Strait must cherish and work to maintain existing achievements. Minister Hsia also stressed that expansion and deepening of cross-strait interactions help to increase mutual trust and understanding between the two sides, thus the two sides must maintain communication and exchanges so as to avoid misunderstanding and misjudging of cross-strait situations. Both sides across the Strait must also endeavor to reduce potential risks of evoking opposition initiatives and strive to create healthy and orderly development in cross-strait relations.

The MAC said that it would insist on its attitude of doing the right thing, respect the Legislative Yuan and public opinion, promote major cross-strait policies such as the legislation of the Cross-Strait Agreement Supervisory Act, and create an environment conducive to maintaining peaceful and stable development of cross-strait relations. With the New Year approaching, the two sides also exchanged New Year greetings; Minister Hsia particularly conveyed his New Year's wishes to people of the Mainland.
