MAC Press Release No. 44

The Mainland Affairs Council (MAC) today (June 18, 2017) stated that Beijing authorities have repeatedly disregarded Taiwan's goodwill and continues to crudely attack the national dignity of the Republic of China, undermine the survival rights and interests of Taiwan, and force Taiwan to accept its "one China" position involving the relinquishment of sovereignty, unilaterally changing the stable status quo in the Taiwan Strait. This seriously challenges and endangers the development of cross-Strait relations and regional peace. "Economic and social integration," "conveniences beneficial to Taiwan," and other measures painstakingly publicized by the Mainland authorities at the Straits Forum are nothing more than hollow and false united front tactics. We believe that the international community and the people of Taiwan have the wisdom to see the truth. "Intimidation and bribery" will not improve cross-Strait relations, nor are they recognized by the people.
The MAC stressed that democracy and public opinion are the bases for government administration. Beijing authorities have no right to interfere with and unilaterally interpret Taiwan's policy implementations. Might is not right. Taiwan will not accept any political proposition by the other side under coercion. The MAC stated that the Mainland's use of a two-faced tactics for political purposes will only widen the psychological distance between the two sides. The government has not changed its position on non-governmental cross-Strait exchanges. It will assess developments and act as needed to maintain national dignity and the rights and interests of the people. It also calls on the public to be careful before traveling to the Mainland. The government will also closely monitor whether measures by the other side are truly beneficial to the rights and interests of the people of Taiwan in the Mainland.
