MAC Press Release No. 42

The Mainland Affairs Council (MAC) stated that Minister Hsiao–yueh Chang today (June 9, 2017) participated in a “Mobile Service Train activity” held by the National Immigration Agency in Qishan District, Kaohsiung City. Minister Chang met with local Mainland spouses and private organizations for exchanges and discussions. She also watched the documentary "Dawn Across the Taiwan Strait" filmed by second-generation new residents Chung Tsu-fu and Chung Chin-i.

During the discussions, Minister Chang said that marriage is the happiest encounter in cross-Strait exchanges. Cultural customs, habits, and differences in social systems can enable greater understanding and care between each happy couple. Every Mainland spouse who crosses the Taiwan Strait for love is like the protagonist in the documentary Ms. Zhao Yunxia, who not only manages her household and cares for her family, but also adapts to Taiwan's customs. The MAC deeply understands the effort made by Mainland friends to socially integrate in Taiwan. In future, the MAC will continue to protect the rights and interests of Mainland spouses living in Taiwan and serve as a strong support for Mainland spouses.

The MAC stated that to care for Mainland spouses living in Taiwan, the MAC in October 2016 relaxed restrictions so Mainland spouses can serve as temporary staff in agencies and schools. It also recently convened a meeting with related agencies to study and discuss the scope of affinity and quotas for visits to Taiwan by the relatives of Mainland spouses, as well as daily life issues related and finances and social welfare in the hope of making life for Mainland spouses in Taiwan more convenient and helping them to promptly integrate with society in Taiwan.
